The history of Epen – where nature, culture and heritage come together

Epen, located in the heart of the rolling South Limburg hills, breathes history. Much of what you see today has its origins in the Middle Ages — and remarkably, the village centre has hardly changed over the centuries. Here, nature and culture go hand in hand, giving the village its unique charm.

The village developed around the Paulus Spring and the later St. Paul’s Church. As early as 1040, the first fortification was built here: a so-called château à motte, a defensive residential tower on an artificial hill. Remains of this site can still be seen near the Dorphof in Terziet, the largest half-timbered farmhouse in the Netherlands — and an absolute highlight during a visit to Epen.

A landscape shaped by water and time

Epen lies in a region with hundreds of natural springs. For centuries, these springs provided fertility to the fields and meadows, allowing farmers to live in harmony with the landscape. The result is a cultural landscape filled with hollow roads, church paths, orchards, and grasslands.

Flowing through this scenery is the Geul, the fastest-flowing river in the Netherlands. To this day, it still powers centuries-old watermills that grind grain for local bakers — a tradition that beautifully connects past and present.

During a walk through Epen, you follow paths that have been used for generations, pass traditional half-timbered houses, and may even discover fossils in the fields — such as sea urchins and belemnites, silent witnesses to the tropical sea that covered this region millions of years ago.

From inn to Aparthotel Ons Epen

Our own building also has a rich history. In the second half of the 19th century, a village café stood here. In 1893, part of the building was converted into a guesthouse for tourists: Herberg Sprooten. Even back then, visitors came to Epen for peace, fresh air, and views over the Geul Valley — exactly the same reasons guests still visit us today.

In 1954, the building received the name Ons Epen. Over the years, we have renovated and modernised, always with respect for the soul of the house. Today, Aparthotel Ons Epen is a beloved destination for hikers, peace seekers, and lovers of life who wish to experience the charm of the Limburg countryside.
